I Am that I Am (אֶהְיֶה אֲשֶׁר אֶהְיֶה ’ehyeh ’ăšer ’ehyeh)
Exodus 3:14: God said to Moses, “I am who I am. This is what you are to say to the Israelites: ‘I am has sent me to you.’”
It is interesting that Jehovah never specified a name or title as we would expect it, instead he said “I AM who I AM“. This profound statement reflects that Jehovah is more than a name, he is all we perceive or need him to be in all things and at all times.
From the Hebrew word which “I AM” was translated we know the root meanings as ‘to be, become, come to pass, exist, happen, fall out’. To me this aspect of the “I AM” is GOD existing; living, unchanging, who at the time of his statement was “to come and to die (fall out)” through his son Jesus. How magnificent and wonderful that Jehovah could portray all this so clearly; Jehovah is Jehovah – GOD existing, present and mighty always.
There is also the implied requirement to have a personal awareness or consciousness of who GOD is; the “I AM who I AM” reflects that GOD is a personal GOD who needs to be known on a much deeper level than just a name. This to me is also highlighted many times by Jesus and exemplified when he questioned Peter;
Mark 8:29: “But what about you?” he asked. “Who do you say I am?”, Peter answered, “You are the Messiah.”
This also to me reflect that Jehovah is always in “I am” mode, i.e. always doing. We tend to have this perception that Jehovah can be a remote God of inaction, who is uninvolved – merely watching. The truth however is that from our first meeting and our first introduction in Genesis, Jehovah is always “doing”, active – he is creating; our GOD is an active creator.
As “I AM” i.e. he is always doing and in purpose.
As such, Jehovah in “I AM” aspect is a GOD of intention*, he is action intended; an aim or plan. The plan was always and is always to be with you … GOD is always busy working his plan so he can be with you; his plan of reconcillation
Isaiah 41:10 …So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. … Don’t be afraid, for I am with you. Don’t be discouraged, for I am your God.
We find today many teachers and councillors are telling us to say daily affirmations; “I am” statement; to find peace, power and purpose in ourselves rather than looking to the only “I AM” that is and always will be; and who alone can provide peace and comfort to our soul.
GOD tells us that he is the only I AM that can provide what we seek…
Matthew 11:29 (NIV): 29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
I pray the love and blessing of GOD to you all.
